STONE'S ATHENA 2ND GENERATION HOLISTICALLY RAISED..NATURAL (RAW)& OR ORGANIC FEED
B.A.R.F. - What Is It?

B.A.R.F. is an acronym for a diet consisting of "Bones and Raw Food" or "Biologically Appropriate Raw Food". That's right, raw, real food. the same types of foods that you and I eat: chicken, beef, fruits, vegetables. all of these are a part of the B.A.R.F. diet. And all are excellent sources of natural protein, enzymes, vitamins and nutrients essential for the development of a healthy dog. Think of it this way, commercial dog foods such as kibble and canned foods have only been around for approximately 50 years. What do you think people fed their dogs before that???

The Barf diet is what dogs have been eating for several hundred thousands of years, so why should we think that a highly processed, grain laden kibble product should be superior to that of a Barf diet? Some like to contend that our dogs are not ' wild dogs' or somehow that they have changed from their ancestral heritage. Man has spent hundreds, perhaps thousands of years perfecting breed type for various characteristics that were needed during various periods of history, hence we may have changed outward appearance; but inwardly they are ALL wolves.

Bones? Aren't bones dangerous to feed?
Whose vet hasn't told them time and time again not to feed your dogs bones, particularly chicken bones? But here we are advocating a diet where one of the primary "ingredients" is chicken bones such as wings, necks and backs. This warning comes from vets in regards to COOKED bones - cooked bones will more often splinter, which can cause perforation of the digestive organs. Raw bones, even chicken bones, are soft, pliable, and digestible. They also contain some of the richest nutrients available.

The BARF diet, otherwise know as the Bones And Raw Food Diet,

"Feed my dog raw meat? Are you crazy?"

"No. Dogs were eating raw meats and foods for thousands of years before commercial pet food companies existed."

So to help shed some light on the topic, here's the first in a series of articles about BARF and raw foods diets that I think you'll find enlightening and surprising, too! 'Bone' Apetit!

Will RAW Meat Make My Dog Sick ??
Over the years, one of the biggest reactions we get from folks is when we recommend feeding raw meat. "Don't they get salmonella?" people ask. Well, the answer to that
question is "no". Unlike humans, dogs and cats don't get salmonella. I used to work at a holistic vet clinic where raw meat was recommended for over 15 years, without ever having one single case of worms, e-coli, salmonella, or any other food poisoning from it. From what we know, it just doesn't happen. At the same time, we always tell people to be safe and treat the meat as carefully as you would if you were eating it yourself. That means always looking for good, healthy-colored cuts, and making sure to keep the meat refrigerated or frozen.

Why use raw meat? Well, that's the important part. Raw meat is essential for dogs and cats, because that's what their systems were designed to process. They have a short, strong digestive tract that easily breaks down bacteria, and uses the enzymes present in order to correctly absorb and process the nutrients. Raw meat also has a wide array of healthy proteins, minerals, and amino acids that normally get destroyed when meat is cooked or processed.

If you find yourself still not convinced -- do not fear. You could always wash the raw meat with grapefruit seed extract, or human-quality hydrogen peroxide. And if that doesn't work for you, it's okay to brown the meat a little on the outside. Keep in mind that even if you cook the meat, it's still a heck of a lot better than the stuff found in most commercial pet foods. If you have any persisting fears or problems, talk to a holistic veterinarian in your area for guidance. And always remember, your pet might act like a human sometimes, but their bodies work very differently. If your critter was out in the yard catching a mouse or bird to eat, they certainly wouldn't bring it inside for you to put in the oven before they ate it.
