Andy Abenthung was born and raised in Vienna, Austria where he trained and did his cooking apprenticeship until he joined the Elite Special Forces Training in the Austrian Army for four years.
After his release from the army he moved to Bermuda and worked at the Southampton Princess Hotel in the famous New Port Room fine tuning his talent and learning North American cooking styles, as well as scuba diving in the Carribean waters in his spare time.
Homesick for his home country and his family he returned to Austria and worked in Vienna as Executive Chef for three years.
In 1989 Andy accepted a job offer as chef with a fellow Austrian at the Gourmet Hideaway Restaurant in Maple Ridge. It was here that he met his future wife Janet who worked as 1st Cook, and eventually as Sous Chef. Andy and Janet fell in love, got married in 1998, and together raised two boys along with a menagerie of pets for which they are especially fond. Janet meantime ran her own cleaning business before following not only Andy's call but her passion for cooking.
After the Gourmet Hideaway Andy worked at a variety of fine dining establishments in the Fraser Valley including ten years as Executive Chef of Meadow Gardens Golf Course. After working in the Caribbean for Holland America Cruise Lines Andy returned to work at the Bedford House in 2005. With his lovely and talented wife Janet as Sous Chef by his side the two of them are dishing out consistently tasty and artfully prepared creatings in addition to the well established favorites that the Bedford House is renouned for.
